62 Years and Counting: Alpha Kappa Alpha’s annual fundraising event supports community, local students

The Omega Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) and its charitable arm, the 1926 Foundation, have consistently established and reached increasingly higher goals as a much needed positive force in Philadelphia. They have generously awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to students from the region who are attending colleges and universities throughout the U.S., and grants to local nonprofits to support community impact programs.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Omega Omega chapter and the 1926 Foundation, Inc. has opened its application for the 2019 HBCU For Life college tour.

The tour will take place Monday, June 17 to Saturday, June 22 with applications open to current 9th through 11th grade students. The cost to participate is $375 which includes meals, lodging and transportation.

For additional eligibility criteria and application information, please visit the 1926 Foundation website. Applications are due Friday, April 5th.

The 1926 Foundation celebrated and hosted the 90th Anniversary Gala of the Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on December 17th. The elegant milestone event, “Celebrating 90 Years of Sisterhood,” was attended by more than five-hundred members, supporters and family and took place at the Philadelphia Hilton Hotel. The 1926 Foundation, Inc. is the non-profit, charitable arm of the chapter which has nearly five-hundred members serving the Philadelphia community. The Foundation functions entirely for the purpose of supporting charitable and educational endeavors and proceeds from the 90th anniversary gala/fundraiser will benefit numerous local charities and scholarship programs. Approximately $50,000 is awarded for these initiatives annually.

The 1926 Foundation, Inc., and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omega Omega Chapter presented “90 Years of Sophistication and Swag” 2016 Luncheon Fashion Show on Feb. 6. The fabulous and well attended affair was held at The Drexelbrook Catering and Special Events Center in Drexelbrook, Pa.

The 1926 Foundation, Inc. and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omega Omega Chapter, presented “Pink Paradise AKA Does Carnival,” at its 2015 Annual Luncheon Fashion Show on Feb. 7. The event, attended by nearly 800 members and guests, was held at the Hilton Hotel in Philadelphia.

The Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has experienced a banner season of service, recognition and achievement. The chapter, along with The 1926 Foundation, Inc., hosted its 19th annual Day of Sharing at Independence Blue Cross corporate headquarters in downtown Philadelphia, and,under the dynamic leadership of the Rev. Lorina Marshall-Blake, won top honors as the 2014 chapter.
